The Founder

The Empee Group, a well – established South Indian corporate with revenues of over Rs. 20 Billion was founded by Mr M.P.Purushothaman in the early 1970s. Mr M.P. Purushothaman, Chairman of the Group, started with a chain of restaurant in Chennai, Tamilnadu, before diversifying into hotels, manufacture of alcoholic beverages and sugar production, Today the Group's core businesses include Alcoholic Beverages, Sugar and Chemicals, Hospitality, Power Generation and Property Development.

The Group

The saga of Empee Group has been one of perseverance and hard work in pursuit of quality and excellence. Founded over 40 years ago, the Empee Group has grown in stature, diversifying its operational areas and size.

Since it inception in the early 70’s the Group has risen to be one of the leading conglomerates in South India. The credit goes in entirety to the undying spirit and farsighted vision of its founder – Chairman Mr. M. P. Purushothaman. Today, the Empee Group’s business encompasses a host of areas like Hotel, Liquor, Beer, Industrial Alcohol, Sugar, Power, Packaging, Transport, Construction and Exports.

The history of Empee began way back in the early 1970’s with a small restaurant and by mid seventies acquired the erstwhile Hotel Madras International, now known as Hotel Grand Orient, and the Hotel New Victoria, thus establishing itself in the Hotel business. The success of these Hotels gave greater impetus to the Group to scale new heights, resulting in establishing a high end 5 Star Deluxe Hotel, “Hilton Chennai” on Jewaharlal Nehru Road, Chennai, in the year 2011.

Empee group diversified into the business of manufacturing liquor in Chennai by establishing its first Distillery in Mevaloorkuppam in 1984. It further ventured into Beer by setting up a brewery in the year 1987, which was later hived off as a result of strategic restructuring. However, the Group has once again picked up the thread by establishing a state of the art Brewery in Gummudipoondi in 2012.

In 1996, emboldened by the success in manufacturing and marketing liquor in Tamil Nadu, Empee Group established another manufacturing Unit in Palakkad, Kerala, to cater to the local demand.

Perceiving the rapid growth of alcohol market in Karnataka, the Group acquired a Distillery Unit in 2003 from the Alembic Group in Whitefield, Bangalore.

As a step further in diversifying its business activities the Group ventured into Sugar and allied products by establishing a Sugar Factory in Naidupet, Nellore Dist of Andhra Pradesh in 1991. Subsequently a Molasses based Industrial Alcohol Plant besides a Co-Generation Power Plant was added, making it a complete Sugar Complex. In the new millennium, the Group embarked on an ambitious expansion in this section with a new sugar Mill in Tirunelveli Dist, with a 50 MW Power Plant attached to it. A Distillery for manufacture of Industrial Alcohol is also on the anvil which will transform the entire activities into an integrated Sugar Complex.

As a part of backward integration to IMFL the Group has established a Grain based Alcohol Plant in Choutkur, in Telangana, to cater to the needs of Premium Liquor brands. The Group’s allied business also includes Packaging Units in Chennai and Palakkad, besides a PET Bottle manufactory in Palakkad.

On the Power front, capacity augmentation is achieved through the Group’s two other Generating Units, one of which is a battery of non-conventional Power generating Wind Mills in Coimbatore Dist and the other a 10 MW Biomass based Power Plant in Aranthangai, both in Tamil Nadu.

With a mission of imparting quality basic education and job oriented professional training to meet the skilled man power requirements in the industries it operates, the Group took its next step with the setting up of “National Matriculation Higher Secondary School” and “Empee Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology”. The Institute in its short span of 19 years has been recognized as one of the premier Catering Institutes in India which possesses all the hallmarks of a professional body in pursuit of excellence. The Institute holds membership with prestigious hospitality related organizations like Association of Educational Institutes for Catering and Hotel Management (AICAM), South India Hotels and Restaurants Association (SIHRA) and Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI).
